Coming soon!
The Science in Your Fiction will be a podcast dedicated to helping writers of all kinds have more accurate science in their storytelling. The podcast certainly isn’t limited to “science fiction” either. While we will cover things like faster-than-light travel, quantum physics and robots, we will also cover many of the basics that are applicable across all genres. Subscribe to my newsletter to be informed of when it goes live.
Have you ever watched a movie or read a story that incorporated some technical area you happened to be well versed in, and they got it very, very wrong? Let’s avoid that! We’ll talk about “bad” science as well as good examples across all forms of storytelling (movies, television, books and more). I will invite expert guests to discuss their area of expertise and how they have seen it done right – and wrong.
How I’ll help writers: Maybe your story is set in a corporate engineering firm and you want to get a few details right. Maybe your protagonist is a physicist, or their love interest is a botanist, and you want to check on a few details. The sky is the limit (figuratively, of course)! What will always be true, though, is that the story comes first. We’ll never let the science get in the way of our fiction.
Anticipated launch late fall 2022.
Background
You might wonder why I am creating this podcast. Well, I spent the better part of the 2010’s as an environmental scientist at consulting firms where my job was turning piles of technical data into nice reports. I’ve now found my way to a university where I get to speak to the best and brightest in academia and industry every day. As a result, I became what is often referred to as a strong “generalist” (I prefer “multipassionate”). I didn’t specialize in one particular area, but rather had the opportunity to explore many technical and non-technical disciplines. Wow, this is starting to read like a cover letter – and nobody likes cover letters! Let’s just say I love chatting science and thought I might be able to help out indie authors like myself. As an added bonus I expect I’ll meet lots of great people along the way!
Check back soon, or subscribe to my newsletter to be advised of the launch. The podcast will be available on all the usual platforms.
